iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro Max: which should you buy now?
iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro Max: specs, prices and real availability. The Duo costs $700 more and was quoted late January; the Pro Max is easier to get.
By the InStock Tracker team · Published · 9 min read
Buy the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you want a new iPhone this year. It costs $700 less, lasts longer on a charge, has a dedicated 4x telephoto camera, and its waits were far shorter. Buy the iPhone Duo only if you want Apple's 7.6-inch foldable screen and can wait, because online orders were quoted late January 2027.
Key Takeaways
- The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,299. The gap is $700 at every storage tier.
- Both use the A20 Pro chip. The Duo's advantage is the 7.6-inch folding inner screen; the Pro Max wins on battery, zoom (4x and 8x versus 2x), pro video formats, Face ID and the Action button.
- Availability is the real decider. Duo online orders showed January 25, 2027 within 30 minutes of pre-orders opening; the latest reported Pro Max online estimate was Oct 19 to 26.
- The Duo has an acknowledged inner-screen cracking issue on "a small number" of units, with no cause or fix announced as of Oct 30, 2026.
Which one can you actually get right now?
The Pro Max, by a wide margin. Duo online dates jumped to late January within half an hour of pre-orders opening. Pro Max waits were measured in weeks, not months.
iPhone Duo availability
- Pre-orders opened at 5 a.m. PT on Oct 16. By 5:30 a.m., Apple's US store showed January 25 for every configuration, so no color or storage tier was easier (MacRumors, Oct 16).
- Apple called demand "nothing short of extraordinary" and said it will keep taking online orders (9to5Mac, Oct 16).
- US Apple Store pickup returned on Oct 24, but inventory was "extremely limited" and most stores had no slots (MacRumors).
- Apple has pulled some existing orders forward. One US order moved from December to Nov 20 to 30, as of Oct 19 (MacRumors).
iPhone 18 Pro Max availability
- On Sept 14, Apple's US online estimates were Oct 6 to 13 for every Pro Max configuration (9to5Mac, Sept 14).
- On launch day, Sept 18, MacRumors said in-store pickup at "select" Apple Store locations was still an option.
- On Sept 25, Cult of Mac reported that Apple's US store could not deliver a Pro Max before Oct 19, with waits running to Oct 26. It also noted that stores get their own inventory, separate from online orders (Cult of Mac).
We have not found newer reported Pro Max estimates as of Oct 30, 2026, and nobody publishes a restock schedule. Stock is decided store by store, so the useful question is which store near you has your exact color and storage today. The longer Pro Max story is in when the iPhone 18 Pro Max will be back in stock.
How do the iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro Max specs compare?
The Duo is a foldable: a 5.4-inch phone that opens into a 7.6-inch screen. The Pro Max is a conventional 6.9-inch phone with a bigger battery, three rear cameras and more pro features. Every row below comes from Apple's iPhone Duo specs and iPhone 18 Pro specs pages, checked Oct 30, 2026.

Launch dates are from Apple's Duo and Pro press releases. The modem report is 9to5Mac's; Apple's page lists the C2 for the 18 Pro but names no modem for the Pro Max.
The two weigh almost the same. Folded, the Duo is noticeably thicker than the Pro Max; open, it is far thinner.
Spec mix-ups to ignore
Some early comparisons got details wrong. Apple's spec pages settle them:
- The Pro Max is aluminum, not titanium. Apple lists an "aluminum unibody design". The Duo is the titanium one.
- Neither phone takes a physical SIM. Apple says both are "not compatible with physical SIM cards".
- The Duo's 44-hour video figure is for the outer screen. On the big inner screen, Apple rates it at 31 hours.
- The 30-minute charging figure is MagSafe. Over USB-C with a 60W-capable adapter, Apple lists about 20 minutes (Duo) and 15 minutes (Pro Max) to 50%.
- RAM isn't on either spec page, so treat any RAM figure as unofficial.
Is the iPhone Duo worth $700 more?
Only if you will use the big inner screen every day. Every Duo tier costs exactly $700 more than the same Pro Max tier, based on Apple Store prices.
| Storage | iPhone Duo | iPhone 18 Pro Max | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 256GB | $1,999 | $1,299 | $700 |
| 512GB | $2,199 | $1,499 | $700 |
| 1TB | $2,599 | $1,899 | $700 |
| 2TB | $3,199 | $2,499 | $700 |
| Apple Card Monthly Installments (24 months, 0% APR) | $83.29/mo | $54.12/mo | $29.17/mo |
The extra $700 buys two things:
- Two phones in one shape. Closed, it is a 5.4-inch phone. Open, it is a 7.6-inch screen, and apps such as Netflix and Zoom have layouts built for it (Apple Newsroom).
- A titanium frame, versus the Pro Max's aluminum.
What you give up besides money: six hours of rated typical battery life, 4x and 8x zoom, ProRes and Apple Log 2 video, LiDAR, the Action button and Face ID. There is also a crease you can see in bright light. For every Duo price and payment option, see the iPhone Duo price guide.
Which has the better camera and battery?
The Pro Max wins both on Apple's published specs.
Cameras. The Pro Max's 48MP Main has a variable aperture from f/1.48 to f/4.0, and its 48MP Telephoto sits at 100 mm (4x) with an 8x optical-quality option. The Duo's 48MP Main (f/1.6) crops to a 12MP optical-quality 2x at 52 mm; it has no separate telephoto lens. For selfies the Pro Max has one 18MP Center Stage camera. The Duo has two: a 12MP one on the outer screen and an under-display FaceTime camera on the inner screen.
Video. If you shoot video seriously, the Pro Max is the only choice of the two. Apple lists ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2 and Genlock for it. The Duo's page lists none of them.
Battery. The Duo uses two batteries and is rated for up to 24 hours of typical use, versus 30 hours for the Pro Max. Use the Duo open and video playback drops from 44 hours to 31.
What problems have been reported with each?
The Duo's is more serious, because Apple has not named a cause.
- iPhone Duo inner screen cracking. Owners reported cracks along the hinge line. On Oct 26 Apple said it is "aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units" and told affected users to contact AppleCare for a replacement (MacRumors, Oct 26). Our iPhone Duo screen cracking guide covers your options.
- iPhone Duo crease. 9to5Mac's review says it isn't visible head-on in most lighting but shows in bright light and can be felt.
- iPhone 18 Pro Max Face ID freeze. Apple confirmed a bug that froze or rebooted some phones and fixed it in iOS 27.0.1 (MacRumors, Sept 21).
Which should you buy?
Decide on what you need and when you need it.
- You need a phone before the holidays: the Pro Max. The Duo's online date was late January.
- You shoot photos or video seriously: the Pro Max, for the 4x lens, LiDAR and pro video formats.
- You want a phone that becomes a small tablet: the Duo, if you accept the wait and the early screen reports.
- You are on a budget: the Pro Max saves $700 at every storage tier.
