Apple Upgrade (Klarna) vs Apple Card Installments vs carriers

Apple Upgrade (a Klarna lease), Apple Card Monthly Installments, or a carrier deal? Compare monthly cost, ownership and lock-in for iPhone 18 Pro.

By the InStock Tracker team · Published · 10 min read

As of Oct 30, 2026, there are three main ways to pay monthly for an iPhone 18 Pro at Apple. Apple Upgrade is a Klarna lease from $34.99 a month that you hand back. Apple Card Monthly Installments is $49.95 a month for 24 months at 0% APR, and you own the phone. Carrier deals give the biggest credits but lock you in.

Key Takeaways

  • Apple Upgrade replaced the iPhone Upgrade Program in the US on July 28, 2026. It is a consumer lease through Klarna, not a purchase or loan.
  • Apple Card Monthly Installments (ACMI) is 0% APR over 24 months for iPhone. You own the phone, and Apple says it is always unlocked.
  • For an iPhone, both Apple Upgrade and ACMI require you to pick AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon at checkout, and neither allows a prepaid carrier plan.
  • Leaving a lease early costs up to your remaining payments. If you keep the phone, a lease plus buyout costs about the same as ACMI, which also pays 3% Daily Cash up front.
  • Carrier deals through Apple offer up to $1,200 with an eligible trade-in, but the phone stays locked until paid off.

This is general information, not financial advice. Terms change often, so check the current terms on Apple's and your carrier's pages before you apply.

What is Apple Upgrade, and is it the iPhone Upgrade Program?

Apple Upgrade is a leasing program provided by Klarna, and it replaces the old iPhone Upgrade Program. Apple launched it in the US on July 28, 2026, and said it "will no longer offer the iPhone Upgrade Program and iPhone Payments in the United States" (Apple Newsroom). Existing members can keep making their remaining monthly payments for now (Apple).

A lease means you pay to use the phone for a set term, then return it. Apple's fine print calls it "a consumer lease, not a purchase or loan."

Here is how it works for an iPhone, according to Apple's Apple Upgrade page:

For the iPhone Duo, Apple's Duo press release lists Apple Upgrade from $57.99 a month on 24 months, and $82.99 to $132.81 a month on 12 months (Apple Newsroom).

One detail sits in Apple's FAQ on the same page: Klarna doesn't accept some cards, including AmEx, Chase and Capital One, while Apple Card works.

What happens when an Apple Upgrade lease ends, or if you leave early?

At the end of the term you can upgrade, return the phone, or buy it, and the first two cost nothing extra if the phone is in good working condition. Leaving before the end is expensive. All of the following is from Apple's Apple Upgrade page:

SituationWhat you pay
Upgrade or return at the end of the termNothing extra. A damage fee applies if the phone isn't in good working condition and you have no AppleCare; with AppleCare, its service fees apply instead.
Upgrade or quit early"The full amount of your remaining lease payments plus applicable taxes." Apple's example: quit after 21 of 24 months and you pay the last three.
Buy the phone, any timeList price plus tax at lease signing, minus payments made and any remaining trade-in credit
Do nothing at the endThe lease rolls month to month for up to six months at your monthly payment, higher if a trade-in credit had lowered it. After that, you're charged the buyout amount.

The practical lesson: an early exit saves you almost nothing, so pick a 12-month term if you know you'll want next year's phone. Set a reminder for your lease end date too, or the month-to-month payments start on their own.

How do Apple Card Monthly Installments work?

Apple Card Monthly Installments (ACMI) splits the price of your iPhone into 24 interest-free payments on your Apple Card. You own the phone, and Apple says an iPhone bought with ACMI "is always unlocked" (Apple Card).

Monthly prices at 0% APR over 24 months, from Apple's launch press releases (iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone Duo):

ModelStarting priceACMI per month (24 months)
iPhone 18 Pro$1,199$49.95
iPhone 18 Pro Max$1,299$54.12
iPhone Duo$1,999$83.29

There are three conditions to know (Apple Card):

How do carrier deals through Apple work?

You trade a long commitment for credits. As of Oct 30, 2026, Apple's buy page offers up to $1,200 with an eligible trade-in at AT&T and T-Mobile, and up to $840 for existing Verizon customers (Apple). Per Apple's fine print, credits arrive over 24 or 36 months, the phone stays locked until paid off, and leaving early stops the credits.

Those credits are carrier money, not Apple Trade In values. Apple's own trade-in credit for an iPhone 13 or later is $175 to $885 (Apple Newsroom). Plan minimums, credit tiers and a 36-month cost table are in our guide to unlocked vs carrier iPhone 18 Pro Max deals.

Apple Upgrade vs ACMI vs carrier deals: side-by-side comparison

The short version: Apple Upgrade has the lowest monthly payment, ACMI is the simplest way to own an unlocked phone at 0% APR, and carrier deals give the most money off if you stay with one carrier for years.

Which payment option is cheapest for an iPhone 18 Pro?

It depends on whether you want to keep the phone. By our arithmetic, 24 Apple Upgrade payments of $34.99 come to $839.76, and 24 ACMI payments of $49.95 come to $1,198.80. Both figures are before tax.

The difference is ownership. After 24 lease payments you hand the phone back, or buy it for the list price plus tax minus what you paid. Here is the plain math, ours, using Apple's formula and ignoring tax:

If you want to...Apple Upgrade (24 months)ACMI (24 months)
Give the phone back after 2 years$839.76 paid, phone returnedNot applicable: you own it
Keep the phone$839.76 + $359.24 buyout = $1,199$1,198.80
3% Daily Cash with Apple CardAbout $25.19 across the lease paymentsAbout $35.97, all up front

So keeping a leased phone costs the same as ACMI, and ACMI pays more Daily Cash sooner. Leasing only saves money if you give the phone back.

Which option should you choose?

Pick the option that matches how long you keep phones and how tied you are to one carrier.

If you are weighing a pricier model, our iPhone Duo price breakdown covers every storage tier and its monthly cost.

Can you pick up a financed or leased iPhone at an Apple Store?

Yes. Apple says leased devices can be picked up at Apple Stores in the US, excluding US territories. There's a deadline: "If you don't pick up your Apple Upgrade device within 7 days of placing your order, your lease will be cancelled," and any charges are refunded. So choose a store that has your model now, not one that might get it next week.

Two other payment details affect how fast you get the phone:

So your payment choice can decide whether pickup is the quickest route. Before you apply, check live iPhone 18 Pro pickup stock at US Apple Stores, shown as "Available Today" or "Available Tomorrow". Then read how Apple Store pickup works so you bring the right ID and QR code.

The bottom line

Lease if you'll hand the phone back, use ACMI if you'll keep it, and take a carrier deal only if you'd keep that plan anyway. Once you've chosen, set a restock alert for your configuration. Alerts come with a Plus or Pro pass and arrive by Telegram, Discord, email or push notification, with the time stock was detected and the time we sent it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Apple Upgrade the same as Klarna?

Apple Upgrade is Apple's program, but the lease itself is provided by Klarna. You need a Klarna account, and the application uses a soft credit check that Apple says won't affect your credit score. MacRumors reports that Klarna doesn't accept some cards, such as AmEx, Chase and Capital One.

Do you need a carrier plan for Apple Upgrade?

For an iPhone, yes. Apple says you must connect to AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon when you enroll, and you cannot use a prepaid carrier plan. The leased iPhone is still always unlocked. You can lease an iPad, Mac or Apple Watch without any carrier connection.

Do you own the iPhone with Apple Upgrade?

No. Apple Upgrade is a lease, so you return the iPhone at the end of the 12- or 24-month term, and damage fees may apply. If you want to keep it, Apple says you pay the list price plus tax, minus the lease payments you already made.

Is Apple Card Monthly Installments really 0% interest?

The iPhone itself is financed at 0% APR over 24 months. Tax and shipping are charged at your Apple Card's variable APR, which Apple says ranged from 17.74% to 27.99% for new accounts as of October 1, 2026. You must also choose AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon.

What happened to the iPhone Upgrade Program?

Apple replaced it with Apple Upgrade, a Klarna lease launched in the US on July 28, 2026, and ended iPhone Payments too. Existing members keep paying for now. When eligible, Apple says they can lease with Apple Upgrade, use ACMI, buy outright, or choose carrier financing.
