iPhone 18 Pro Max unlocked vs Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile deals
iPhone 18 Pro Max unlocked vs Verizon, AT&T or T-Mobile: the exact carrier credits, what locks your phone, and when buying unlocked from Apple wins.
By the InStock Tracker team · Published · 9 min read
Buy the iPhone 18 Pro Max unlocked if you want freedom to switch carriers or keep a cheaper plan. As of Oct 30, 2026, carrier deals through Apple reach $1,200 with a trade-in, but they need a pricey plan for 24 to 36 months and lock the phone until it's paid off. Same phone, same $1,299 starting price.
Key Takeaways
- The AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon versions of the iPhone 18 Pro Max are the same phone, Apple says. Only the financing and the carrier lock differ.
- Paying in full, Apple Card Monthly Installments, or an Apple Upgrade lease all give you an unlocked phone.
- Carrier offers on Apple's site (Oct 30, 2026) reach $1,200 at AT&T and T-Mobile and $840 for existing Verizon customers, credited over 24 or 36 months.
- The credit only wins if you'd pay for the required plan anyway: Verizon's top credit needs Unlimited Ultimate at a $95/mo minimum for 36 months.
- US iPhone 18 Pro Max models are eSIM-only. Apple says an unlocked US iPhone works with over 400 carriers that support eSIM.
Is an iPhone 18 Pro Max from Apple unlocked?
Yes, in most cases. Apple says an iPhone bought from Apple is unlocked. The exception is financing through the AT&T Installment Plan, T-Mobile Equipment Installment Plan, or Verizon Device Payment Program, which locks the phone "to the carrier until paid in full" (Apple).
Apple also says "the iPhone models for AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon are the same." You are not choosing different hardware, only a different way to pay (same Apple page).
You get an unlocked Pro Max from Apple in three ways:
- Pay in full. The Pro Max costs $1,299 for 256GB, up to $2,499 for 2TB (Apple Store). This is the only route that lets you pick "Connect on your own later", so it's the one to use for a prepaid plan or another carrier.
- Apple Card Monthly Installments (ACMI). It's $54.12 a month for 24 months at 0% APR (Apple Newsroom). Apple says an iPhone bought this way "is always unlocked", but you must select AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon at checkout and can't use a prepaid plan (Apple Card).
- Apple Upgrade. This is a 12- or 24-month lease through Klarna that replaced the iPhone Upgrade Program. A leased iPhone "is always unlocked", but you don't own it unless you buy it out. The same carrier rule applies: AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon, no prepaid plan (Apple Upgrade).
The full payment comparison is in our guide to Apple Upgrade vs monthly installments.
What are the carrier deals on the iPhone 18 Pro Max?
All three carriers offer credits through Apple's own store, tied to an eligible plan and a trade-in. The bigger the credit, the pricier the plan you must keep. These are the offers in the fine print of Apple's iPhone 18 Pro buy page as of Oct 30, 2026, marked limited time and subject to change.
| Carrier and plan | Plan minimum (Apple's fine print) | Credit on iPhone 18 Pro Max, by trade-in | How it's paid | Fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AT&T, most eligible unlimited plans | Not listed | $1,200, $930 or $350 | Monthly bill credits over 36 months, 0% APR | $35 activation/upgrade fee |
| AT&T Starter or Extra plans | Not listed | $930 or $350 (Value 2.0: lower) | Same | $35 |
| T-Mobile Experience Beyond 2.0, Experience Beyond or Go5G Next (existing customers) | $100+/mo after AutoPay | $1,200, $900 or $500 | Apple instant trade-in credit at checkout, then bill credits over 24 or 36 months. Max 4 promotions per account. | $35 device connection charge |
| Verizon Unlimited Ultimate | $95/mo with Auto Pay, 36 months | Existing: $840 or $420. New line: $1,000 or $500 | Apple instant trade-in credit, then bill credits over 36 months on Device Payment | Not listed |
| Verizon Unlimited Plus | $80/mo with Auto Pay, 36 months | Existing: $660 or $330. New line: $840 or $420 | Same | Not listed |
| Verizon Unlimited Welcome | $65/mo with Auto Pay, 36 months | Existing: $300 or $150. New line: $480 or $240 | Same | Not listed |
Plan minimums exclude taxes and fees. T-Mobile's 55+, Military and First Responder plans get lower credits. Apple's fine print doesn't list AT&T plan prices.
Apple's Pro press release adds that carrier credits of up to $1,200 apply when you trade in an iPhone 14 or later, in any condition.
What's the catch with carrier credits?
Most of the money arrives month by month, and only if you stay. Apple's fine print spells out the trade-offs:
- Credits are spread out. AT&T applies them over 36 months. T-Mobile and Verizon combine an instant Apple trade-in credit at checkout with monthly bill credits.
- Leaving early costs you. AT&T says that if you cancel eligible service, credits stop and you owe the remaining device balance. T-Mobile says credits stop if you pay off early or cancel the account.
- The phone stays locked to the carrier until it is paid off.
- Tax is on the full price. AT&T charges tax on the full retail price, T-Mobile on the pre-credit price, and Verizon says sales tax may be assessed on the full value.
What does a Verizon deal really cost over 36 months?
Add the plan to the phone. The table below is our arithmetic, not Verizon's or Apple's. It uses an existing Verizon customer buying the 256GB Pro Max ($1,299), the higher credit tier, and each plan's minimum price from Apple's fine print. Taxes and fees are left out.
| Verizon plan | Phone after credit | Plan, 36 × minimum | 3-year total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unlimited Ultimate | $1,299 − $840 = $459 | $3,420 | $3,879 |
| Unlimited Plus | $1,299 − $660 = $639 | $2,880 | $3,519 |
| Unlimited Welcome | $1,299 − $300 = $999 | $2,340 | $3,339 |
In plain terms: stepping up from Welcome to Ultimate adds $540 in credit, about $15 a month over 36 months, but $30 a month in plan cost. If Welcome covers your needs, the biggest credit costs you about $540 more over three years. Also remember the credit needs a trade-in, and that old phone has cash value of its own: Apple Trade In quotes $175 to $885 for an iPhone 13 or later, with no plan attached (Apple Newsroom).
Without a deal, the monthly route costs the same as paying up front. Verizon's own page lists the Pro Max from $36.11 a month for 36 months at 0% APR, which is $1,299.96 in total. ACMI is $54.12 × 24 = $1,298.88 (both our arithmetic).
Verizon's own site may advertise different promotions from Apple's checkout. We couldn't confirm Verizon's direct promo amounts on Oct 30, 2026, so compare both before you order.
Is it better to buy the iPhone 18 Pro Max unlocked or from Verizon?
Buy through Verizon (or AT&T or T-Mobile) if you already want an eligible plan, will stay 24 to 36 months, and have a trade-in. Buy unlocked if you want to switch carriers, use a prepaid or smaller carrier, or keep your options open. An unlocked phone paid in full works on any carrier that supports eSIM on iPhone.
| Unlocked from Apple | Carrier deal through Apple | |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware | Same phone | Same phone |
| Carrier lock | None | Locked until paid in full |
| Savings | No carrier credits | Up to $1,200 in credits with a trade-in |
| Commitment | None if you pay in full; ACMI is 24 months and still unlocked | 24 or 36 months on a required plan |
| Switching carriers | Any time | Credits stop; AT&T says the remaining balance is due |
This table is our reading of Apple's terms, not Apple's advice.
When does a Verizon iPhone 18 Pro Max unlock?
As soon as it's paid off. Under Verizon's unlocking policy, effective Feb 18, 2026, postpaid phones bought at full retail price unlock automatically, and so do financed phones once the balance is paid in full with a secure payment method (Verizon).
Two exceptions matter. If you pay off the phone with a Verizon Gift Card, unlocking is delayed by 35 days. Prepaid Verizon phones stay locked until 365 days of paid, active service. And remember that paying off early ends any remaining promo credits.
How does eSIM change the unlocked vs carrier choice?
It makes unlocked phones easier to move between carriers. US iPhone 18 Pro models "don't have a physical SIM tray and activate only using eSIM" (Apple Store).
- Apple says an unlocked US iPhone can be activated with "over 400 carriers who support eSIM on iPhone, in 100 countries and regions" (Apple).
- You need Wi-Fi for eSIM setup (Apple Store).
- Verizon customers verify their account before checkout. AT&T and T-Mobile customers activate during on-screen setup (Apple).
Does unlocked vs carrier affect Apple Store pickup?
Yes, in who can collect it. Apple says an iPhone upgrade on an existing carrier contract can be picked up by the primary account holder or someone they authorize. An unlocked iPhone can be picked up by the purchaser or a designated pickup contact. Our Apple Store pickup guide covers what to bring.
Store stock is the same phone either way, since every carrier version is identical. A pickup slot you find works for an unlocked or a carrier checkout. InStock Tracker shows US Apple Store pickup stock only, not carrier stores or Best Buy, split into "Available Today" and "Available Tomorrow". Check live iPhone 18 Pro Max pickup stock, then choose unlocked or a carrier at checkout. If your store is out, see when the iPhone 18 Pro Max will be back in stock or set a restock alert by Telegram, Discord, email or push notification, stamped with when stock was detected and when the alert went out.
Which should you choose?
- Choose unlocked, paid in full, if you travel, use a prepaid plan, might switch carriers, or plan to sell the phone before 36 months.
- Choose a carrier deal if you'd pay for the eligible AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon plan anyway, will stay the full term, and have a qualifying trade-in.
- Choose ACMI if you want monthly payments and an unlocked phone, and you're on a non-prepaid AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon plan.
Frequently asked questions
Is the iPhone 18 Pro Max from Apple unlocked?
Yes, in most cases. Apple says an iPhone bought from Apple is unlocked unless you finance it through the AT&T Installment Plan, T-Mobile Equipment Installment Plan, or Verizon Device Payment Program. Paying in full, Apple Card Monthly Installments, and Apple Upgrade leases all give you an unlocked phone.
Is the Verizon iPhone 18 Pro Max different from the unlocked one?
No. Apple says the iPhone models for AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon are the same. The only difference is the lock: a phone financed through Verizon's Device Payment Program stays locked to Verizon until it is paid in full. The unlocked version works with any carrier that supports eSIM.
Can I use an unlocked iPhone 18 Pro Max on Verizon?
Yes. US iPhone 18 Pro Max models are eSIM-only, and Apple says an unlocked US iPhone can activate with over 400 carriers that support eSIM. You need Wi-Fi during setup. You won't get Verizon's credits, which apply only when you buy through Verizon's offer.
Does the unlocked iPhone 18 Pro Max cost more?
No. As of Oct 30, 2026, Apple lists the 256GB Pro Max at $1,299 whether you pick a carrier or "Connect on your own later". Apple's fine print applies its $30 connectivity discount only to iPhone 17. Carrier credits are separate and need a plan and trade-in.
Do I need a trade-in to get the $1,200 carrier credit?
Yes. Apple's buy page advertises savings of up to $1,200 "with an eligible trade-in" at AT&T and T-Mobile. The amount depends on your plan and the phone you trade in, credits arrive over 24 or 36 months, and leaving early stops them. Check exact terms before ordering.
