iPhone Duo resellers and scams: how to avoid overpaying
iPhone Duo scalper prices run thousands over retail, and scams follow. What resellers charge, how to check a used Duo, and safer ways to buy one.

Buying an iPhone Duo from a reseller costs far more than retail and carries real risk. On Oct 16, 2026, Dexerto reported a $3,199 2TB model selling on eBay for $4,999.99. As of Oct 30, 2026, the safer route is Apple, a carrier or a major retailer, plus watching Apple Store pickup stock. If you buy secondhand, check Activation Lock first.
Key Takeaways
- Dexerto's Oct 16, 2026 eBay sold listings ran about $700 to $1,800 over Apple's price (our arithmetic). Higher "sold" figures have been reported since, and nobody publishes reliable US resale prices for today.
- Many "pre-order" listings are for phones the seller doesn't have yet, and you can't return a resold phone to Apple.
- Never buy an iPhone that is Activation Locked, and check Parts and Service History and Carrier Lock before you pay.
- Apple's scam guidance says: "Never use Apple Gift Cards to make payments to other people."
How much are iPhone Duo resellers charging?
Resellers have been asking for well over Apple's price. Apple sells the iPhone Duo for $1,999 (256GB), $2,199 (512GB), $2,599 (1TB) and $3,199 (2TB) (Apple). Our iPhone Duo price guide breaks down each tier.
Dexerto reported eBay sold listings on October 16, 2026, the day pre-orders opened (Dexerto):
| Configuration | Apple price | Reported eBay sale price (Dexerto) | Markup (our arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone Duo 256GB | $1,999 | $2,699 to $3,800 | $700 to $1,801 |
| iPhone Duo 1TB Night Sky | $2,599 | $4,400 | $1,801 |
| iPhone Duo 1TB Star White | $2,599 | $4,100 | $1,501 |
| iPhone Duo 2TB Night Sky | $3,199 | $4,999.99 | $1,800.99 |
Asking prices went higher. 9to5Mac counted dozens of eBay pre-order listings "asking as much as $5,200" (9to5Mac, Oct 16), and later reported that scalper asking prices on eBay and X reached $10,000 (9to5Mac). Asking prices are not proof of sales.
One higher "sold" figure exists. On Oct 22, 2026, VnExpress cited the resale tracker Resell Calendar, which counted more than 200 eBay sales in the first 48 hours and a 2TB Duo marked sold for $9,777 (VnExpress). A listing marked sold doesn't prove the buyer paid or the phone shipped, so treat it as an outlier, not a market price.
Why are iPhone Duo resale prices so high?
Supply is tight. Pre-orders opened at 5 a.m. PT on Oct 16, and by 5:30 a.m. Apple's US online store showed a January 25 shipping date for every Duo configuration, MacRumors reported. Apple called demand "nothing short of extraordinary" (9to5Mac, Oct 16).
Resellers sell speed. You pay them to skip a wait that may be shorter than it looks. MacRumors reported that Apple has moved some pre-order delivery dates earlier, including one US order that moved from December to November 20-30 (MacRumors, Oct 19). For what to expect next, see when the iPhone Duo will be back in stock.
Update, Oct 30, 2026. The Duo went on sale in stores on Oct 23. Two days earlier, Apple said "Apple Stores will have limited iPhone Duo available for walk-in customers" in the US, and its online store told shoppers to check back Oct 24 for pickup reservations (MacRumors, Oct 21). So retail units now trickle into stores as well as ship. What that has done to US resale prices is unknown: we found no verified US data since launch.
What are the risks of buying an iPhone Duo from a reseller?
The biggest risks are paying for a phone that never arrives, getting a locked or altered phone, and losing Apple's return rights.
- Phantom pre-orders. Many reseller "pre-order" listings are for phones the seller doesn't have yet. Some sellers showed Apple order confirmations, and Dexerto notes those screenshots don't prove the phones were delivered.
- No Apple return. Apple says only items bought directly from Apple can be returned to Apple. A phone from a third party follows that seller's return policy (Apple).
- Apple can cancel resale orders. Apple sells to end users only. It says it may cancel orders it suspects are for resale, and it can limit quantities even after you order (Apple). A seller's "guaranteed" pre-order is only as good as Apple honoring it.
- A two-unit cap. In the US, Apple's site and app show "A maximum of 2 iPhone Duo can be purchased per customer" when you try to add a third, MacRumors reported on Oct 19, 2026. A seller offering a stack of "confirmed" orders deserves extra suspicion.
- Locked or repaired phones. A used phone can be tied to someone else's Apple Account or carrier, or contain non-genuine parts.
Losing the return window matters more on the Duo. Some owners have reported inner-screen cracks, and buying through Apple keeps your 14-day return option. See iPhone Duo screen cracking for what Apple has said.
How to check a used or resold iPhone Duo before you pay
Inspect the phone in person, powered on, before any money changes hands. Apple's guide to buying a used iPhone lists the checks (Apple Support):
- Check Activation Lock. Apple's rule is simple: "If the iPhone is Activation Locked, don't buy it." Activation Lock ties the phone to the previous owner's Apple Account (Apple Support).
- Open Settings > General > About. Look at Parts and Service History. "Unknown" can mean a non-genuine part (Apple Support).
- Check Carrier Lock on the same screen. It should say "No SIM restrictions". Apple says the Duo is "not compatible with physical SIM cards", so there is no SIM tray to test (Apple).
- Check Battery Health in Settings.
- Inspect for damage, then test the cameras, speakers, microphone and buttons.
- Note the serial number or IMEI from Settings > General > About (Apple Support). Enter it at Apple's Check Coverage page.
A coverage result showing the right model and a matching purchase date is a good sign. Apple does not describe Check Coverage as an authenticity test, so treat it as one check among several, not proof.
Should you buy an iPhone Duo from a scalper?
For most people, no. A scalper charges you hundreds or thousands of dollars to skip a wait that is already shrinking, and you give up Apple's return window in the process. Here is the trade in plain numbers, using Dexerto's Oct 16 sales and our arithmetic:
- 256GB: $1,999 at Apple vs $2,699 to $3,800 resold. You pay $700 to $1,801 extra.
- 2TB: $3,199 at Apple vs $4,999.99 resold. You pay about $1,801 extra.
- What the extra buys: a phone sooner, if the seller really has one. It doesn't buy a return to Apple, or any protection if Apple cancels the seller's order.
If you still go ahead, meet in person, run the checks above, and pay with a method that offers buyer protection. Never pay a stranger up front for a "pre-order slot".
How to spot iPhone Duo scams: fake stores, phishing and gift cards
Treat any unexpected "Duo in stock" message or site as a likely scam until proven otherwise. Apple's guide to phishing and fake support scams gives the rules (Apple Support):
- Check the web address. Apple warns that a link can look right while the URL doesn't match the company's website.
- Presume unexpected requests are scams. Apple says it's "safer to presume that it's a scam" and to contact the company directly.
- Protect your sign-in. Apple says it "will never ask you to log in to any website" or to enter a two-factor authentication code into one.
- Never pay with gift cards. Apple says: "Never use Apple Gift Cards to make payments to other people."
- Report it. Forward suspicious emails that claim to be from Apple to [email protected], and report scam calls to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
Apple's page does not cover fake "in stock" stores specifically. The practical rule: buy only at apple.com, the Apple Store app, your carrier, or a well-known retailer. Best Buy, for example, also sells the Duo (MacRumors, Oct 16).
What is the safest way to get an iPhone Duo?
Buy it from Apple, a carrier or a major retailer at retail price. You get a new phone, a return window, and no markup.
| Apple (online or pickup) | Reseller (eBay, X, marketplaces) | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $1,999 to $3,199 | Dexerto's Oct 16 sales $2,699 to $4,999.99; one tracker reported a $9,777 "sold" 2TB; asks up to $10,000 |
| Return to Apple | 14 calendar days | Not possible; seller's policy |
| Activation Lock risk | Not an issue on a new phone | Must check yourself |
| Delivery | Wait for ship date or pickup slot | Depends on the seller actually having it |
Apple's return policy gives you 14 calendar days from the day you receive the phone.
Waiting doesn't have to mean January. Apple says you can check whether a product is in stock by seeing if it's available for pickup at a nearby store. When Duo pickup reopened on Oct 23, a MacRumors spot check found "extremely limited availability", so slots go fast when they appear (MacRumors, Oct 23).
That is where we come in. Check live iPhone Duo pickup stock at US Apple Stores, split into "Available Today" and "Available Tomorrow". Or set a restock alert: you get a Telegram, Discord, email or push alert showing when stock was detected and when the alert was sent. Checking stock is free with no account, alerts come with a Plus or Pro pass, and we never buy for you. Our iPhone Duo in stock guide covers the full strategy.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to buy an iPhone Duo on eBay?
It can be, but the risk is on you. Many listings are pre-orders the seller doesn't have yet, and you can't return the phone to Apple. If you buy, inspect it in person first, and never accept one that is Activation Locked or shows unknown parts.
How much do scalpers charge for the iPhone Duo?
Dexerto reported eBay sales on Oct 16, 2026 of $2,699 to $3,800 for the $1,999 256GB model, and $4,999.99 for a $3,199 2TB. 9to5Mac reported asks up to $10,000. Current US prices are unknown; marked-sold listings aren't proof of completed sales.
How can I tell if an iPhone Duo is fake or stolen?
Check that Activation Lock is off, then open Settings > General > About for Parts and Service History and Carrier Lock. Enter the serial number at Apple's Check Coverage page. Apple doesn't call that an authenticity test, so combine it with an in-person inspection.
Does Apple limit how many iPhone Duos you can buy?
Yes. In the US, Apple's website and app show "A maximum of 2 iPhone Duo can be purchased per customer," MacRumors reported on Oct 19, 2026. Apple's sales policy also lets it limit quantities and cancel orders it suspects are for resale, even after you order.
Will an Apple Store buy back or return a resold iPhone Duo?
No return. Apple only accepts returns of items bought directly from Apple, so a resold phone follows the seller's policy. You can still get an Apple Trade In quote later, but values vary by condition, and Find My must be turned off first.
